Hank Moody (David Duchovny) and his carnival of souls Other interesting early moments include Hank's vasectomy and more importantly the release of his second book that chronicled why he needed to get the snip: this is to say, the book that he wrote and was publish under another's name. Without giving too much away, the best part of this season had to do with Hank's second book entitled 'Fu@%ing and Punching.' What follows this story line is an infuriating little tale of lies and sex, but one that is carried off much better than latter storylines. One of the lesser tales of sex and violence was when Lew Ashby entered into the story. Played by actor, Ashby was a believable, if not incredible character.
There was huge potential for this warped and drugged-up music producer to help take Hank to a new platform, but rather than letting Rennie do something with the character, the story was again confined by writing that preferred the cast to writhe in misery rather than rise above: Some people found the sex den, coked up stories as a comical commentary on LA life, but the majority of the time this was just wishful thinking for a show that was headed down a dark path and didn't know how return to something of substance (rather than substance abuse). Again, there is a lot going on that we don't want to spoil for those not in the know, but the season finale saw a huge turn of events for the Hank-Ashby-hooker triangle, and this was among the more realistic portrayals chose to display throughout the entirety of the second season. Other notable storylines include Becca and her first taste of love, the ever-enchanting Runkle family and their run-in with a lost little porn-star named Daisy that was just looking to make some friends and some guys to F while in Hollywood. Also, Runkle had a run-in with his secretary that took he and Marcy through a few dark circles of intrigue, but again, these promising stories turned into torturous, tumultuous epics that saw no one happy and everyone wondering, 'what happened to the clever comedy?'
Overall season 2 was a series of build-ups and let downs that were overcompensated for by angry sex and malicious, maddening characters. We're not sure about season 3—there will definitely be a third season, but we're not sure if it's something worth covering as the stories have turned into painful sagas with no relief (comical or otherwise). Duchovny, may be a handsome and charming lead, but the foundation he laid in the first season of dark humor over a clever show was pretty well demolished by vomit and porn over the course of the 12-episode second season.
